Linköping University has been working with machine learning and AI for many years. Companies in our region include AI Sweden/LiU, Nira Dynamics, Qualcomm, Magna, Sectra and SyntheticMR.

Business Intelligence

Business Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Data Mining are transforming decision-making and automating processes. These technologies provide businesses with powerful tools for data analysis and visualization, enabling more informed decisions. Many large companies implement these methods internally and some offer them as services. Examples of key companies in our region include CGI, Combitech, Ericsson, Imatrics, Infor, Sectra and Signality.

Consumer products

The companies in Mjärdevi are usually focused on B2B, but their technologies often appear in consumer products as part of advanced system integrations. If you buy a new car today, it probably contains hardware or software developed in Linköping, and when you start Netflix, algorithms commercialized via companies in Mjärdevi are triggered. However, many exciting companies have become more consumer-oriented over the years, not least in e-commerce systems such as Ateles, which specializes in online shops for brands such as Daniel Wellington, Gant and Gina Tricot that sell consumer products. Other interesting companies include Vissheim and their autonomous greenhouses, Climabed, Eat:em, Hovmöller, Linkura, LumeoTech, M.nu, Vissheim and Ateles. And don’t forget Narrative, who were incredibly early on the lifelogging trend and set a Swedish record for raising start-up capital via Kickstarter. Another example of a successful Kickstarter campaign is Revolut and their personal secure data storage device.

Cyber security

Cybersecurity, including cryptography and ciphers, is a growing field that is crucial to protecting critical infrastructure and secure communications. Key companies such as Sectra, known for its Tiger XS crypto phone, and Combitech, a major cybersecurity consultant, are leading developments in our region. Other prominent companies include Eurotempest, Link22, Sylog, Netnod, Qamcom, Sigma, Saab, FOI and FMV.



Digital image processing

Digital image processing and digital vision are important components of the broader digitalization trend. Linköping University is known for its world-class research in this field, which has led to the creation of several innovative companies. These companies span areas such as medical imaging, sensor technology and AI solutions. ContextVision, Innovative Vision and Sectra were the first pioneers in the park. Some other important examples are Agricam, AMRA, Cinside, Glana Sensors, Imafor, Mabema, Sick, SyntheticMR, Termisk Systemteknik, Microtec, MicroDri.

Enterprise Resource Planning

Enterprise Resource Planning, ERP and management systems have a strong presence in the region, with companies such as IFS Systems and a history with Intentia, which was founded by students from Linköping University. These companies have expanded globally, with Intentia merging with Lawson and later Infor. Other prominent system providers in the park are BRP Systems, Cambio Healthcare, Columbus, Flexime, Industrimatematik, Istone, Medius, Millnet, Sematic and Taxicaller.

Greentech

The region is a hub for innovation in Greentech, Cleantech and digitalization, driving sustainable development. It promotes solutions in renewable energy, environmental technologies and intelligent infrastructure. Future growth is expected through continued innovation and collaboration. Key companies in the region include Agricam, Biototal, Epishine, Ligna Energy, Modio, Polar Lights and Dasoq, as well as Cleantech Östergötland and its member companies.

MOBILE PHONE

GSM, the global system for mobile communications, was created and developed by Ericsson. Key elements of the GSM system were standardized and designed by Ericsson experts at R&D facilities in Linköping. GSM has revolutionized the way humanity communicates and marked the beginning of transmitting data wirelessly, paving the way for the mobile Internet. Digitalization continues to change the very foundations of modern society, driving innovation and connectivity on a global scale.

3g 4g 5g. Significant elements of the second generation telecommunications system system, 2G or GSM, originates from Ericsson’s R&D facilities in Linköping, and parts of 3G were also developed in Mjärdevi. In the 4G and 5G systems engineers from Ericsson in Mjärdevi are deeply involved in both standardization and and development.

Healthtech

The Health Tech industry in the Linköping region is experiencing rapid growth. Throughout history, many companies have developed exciting solutions, driving innovation in the sector. The future holds great potential with continuous progress. Some notable companies are Addbio, AMRA, Biochromix, BioOptico, BioRepria, Cambio Healthcare, Context Vision, CTC, Dynamic Code, Everon, Glycobond, GOLI, Imafor, Imatrics, KMC, Lifee, LinkoCare, Linkura, Melerit Medical, Milton Medtech, novamia, Phoniro, Respiheart Sectra, Synthetic MR, Usify and Worldish.

Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an important area of development, with IoT World as the significant infrastructure hub, supported by the National Forensic Center, NFC, Region Östergötland and Rise. A core competence of the park includes connected systems along with software, embedded systems and hardware design. Key companies driving development in the region are Actia, Attentec, Combitech, KnowIT, Ericsson, Mediatek, Modio, Nira Dynamics, Prodelox, Sigma Connectivity, VISIARC and Veoneer.

Knowledge management

Knowledge management is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on creating, sharing, using and managing knowledge within organizations. In the East Sweden region, key initiatives include open innovation, platforms such as East Sweden Hack and networks such as SMIL. The innovation system involves Linköping University, LEAD and regional actors. Examples of key companies in the region are ALMI, Region Östergötland, ESBR, Code Summer Camp, Makerspace and Startup Bar.



Mobility

The field of mobility, AI and autonomy is evolving rapidly, with technologies enabling safer and more autonomous driving systems. Actia is connecting vehicles around the world with its pioneering solutions. Qualcomm (Veoneer & Arriver) aims to become a leader in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), while Nira Dynamics focuses on sensor technologies. Companies driving innovation in our region include Magna, Fordonsverket, Vector, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) and the Swedish Transport Administration’s AI Lab.

MRI

Linköping University is globally recognized for its leadership in digital image analysis, and several companies have emerged from this expertise. Sectra, known for its mammography solutions, and Amra, which specializes in body composition profiling, are just two examples. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an important focus area that forms part of the University’s core competence in digital imaging. Key contributions in the field of MRI include CMIV and Synthetic MR, which further promote innovation in this area.

Nanotechnology and semiconductor innovation

Nanotechnology and semiconductor innovation are driving the development of materials and miniaturization, with new materials offering unique properties. This area includes the development of nanostructures, materials and machines using chemical kinetics. Some key companies in our region are Graphensic, DP Patterning, Graphrén, Impact Coating, Invisense, LFM, Ligna Energy, Lunamicro, PEA, Mimsi, Saab, WeMatter, Epishine, SweGAN, Teksic, Polar Lights and ST Microelectronics.



Integrity protection

Privacy is an important and growing area, with the EU’s implementation of the GDPR leading the way towards stronger rules. This benefits citizens and consumers by protecting personal data. The development of technologies such as Neo Technology’s graph databases has played a role in uncovering important global issues. Companies like Cloud Backend, BraceIt and Blockan are examples of key players in the changing privacy landscape in our region.

robotics

The Robotics, Automation and Industry 4.0 area is transforming industries by integrating advanced technologies to improve efficiency and innovation. This area focuses on automation, intelligent systems and connected machines. The future looks promising with continued advances in smart technologies. Companies emerging in our region include Dynamo Robotics, LiU, Mabema, Sick, Microtech and MicroDri.



Streaming media

The region has a strong history in streaming media, with innovations such as MPEG compression and JPEG2000 originating here. It has nurtured many companies in this field, such as Zenterio, which offered a platform for streaming media with clients such as Netflix.

Kreatel was a start-up company first acquired by Google, later by Motorola, and now part of Comescope. Nokia Home Communication was headquartered in the Science Park. Nokia’s setup box business was relocated and gave rise to a range of new startups. Other notable companies in history include 27M, Agama, Attentec, Commscope, Labatus, Opera Software, Zenterio and startups like Indentive and FishrTV.

Telecommunications

Several global telecom standards and technologies originated or were implemented at Ericsson in the park; see also 3G/4G/5G. Companies such as Flextronics once manufactured mobile phones here for global distribution. The area continues to flourish, with innovative companies such as MediaTek, Netadmin, Teledyne, Shortlink, Recutech and Qamcomm contributing to technological advances.



UAV

The region has become a hub for innovation in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), with notable developments in various sectors. Skeldar, from Saab, specializes in UAV technology, while Sparv focuses on unmanned balloon flights. RISE offers a testbed for UAVs in Västervik, further strengthening the local ecosystem. And don’t forget the rising star Cybaero.



Visualization and image analysis

Visualization and image analysis are rapidly growing areas driven by innovation in our region. Visual Sweden promotes this development by supporting companies that have contributed to this growth over the years, even if not all of them are still around today. The future holds exciting advances as these technologies continue to develop. Key companies include AMRA, Cinside, ContextVision, Dataton, Sectra, Sick, Spotscale, Termisk Systemteknik, Visage, VISIARC, Woodeye, Arboair, Axis, Devant, Mabema, Skymaker Maxar and XMReality.

Web technologies

The field of web technology has a rich history in our region, with pioneers from LIU’s Computer Science Club creating Sweden’s first website, one of the first ten in the world. This innovation led to the founding of Roxen Internet Software. Other notable companies driving developments in the area are Opera Software and Cendio. These companies have shaped the web technology landscape and continue to contribute to its future growth.
